In 1868 a small building, a "palehuis", like many of the original houses, was built, to be both English church and school and it was called after the patron saint of fishermen,  St. Peter

Three years later a bigger stone building followed. Teacher, Dan van Blommestein, conducted services, adding lustre to the singing with his concertina.  Each quarter the Caledon minister, Rev Wiltshire came  on horseback, for Holy Communion, to baptise and solemnise marriages.

A chapel was added, but sadly collapsed under a fierce gale.  By 1889 it was rebuilt. Canon Samuel Hinchliff, first resident minister, came in 1928. He had a deep interest in the people of Hermanus, and stayed 21 years.

For something different, be sure to stop for a hot cup of tea or coffee and fresh scones at the St Peter's Church Coffee Morning every Saturday from 09:30.

St Peter’s, our oldest church, is unique in several ways:  Their coffee morning has run for over thirty years; the church bell-chimes ring out a joyful message, and behind the parish hall, one finds The Beacon Christian bookshop.
