African Penguins Fun Facts and a video taken at Stoney Point

The African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the Black-footed Penguin is a species of penguin, confined to southern African waters. It is also widely known as the "Jackass" Penguin for its donkey-like bray, although several related species of South American penguins produce the same sound.

FUN FACTS:

  1. African Penguins are also known as Jackass Penguins for its donkey-like bray.
  2. They eat mainly fish but they also eat squid and shellfish.
  3. Their average swimming speed is 7km per hour.
  4. African Penguins are about 60cm tall.
  5. Males tend to be a little bigger than the females.
  6. They weigh between 2.4 and 3.6kgs.
  7. African Penguins dive on average to 30m,
  8. Can dive as deep as 130m.
  9. They hold their breath on a dive for an average of 2.5 minutes.
  10. Their average lifespan is about 10 years.
  11. They Start breeding at 4 years old and lay 2 eggs.
