Mr. Sydney Gearing a future mayor of Rondebosch. He bought a cottage at Hermanus and took his family there for a seaside holiday. It stood on the corner of Marine Drive and Harbour Road (than known as Main Road) accross the way of the from the cypress tree.
The cottage looked out to the headland guarding the harbour and that is how this headland was given the name Gearin's Point.
In the older days…
when the Old Harbour was still in use as a fishing harbour, Gearing's Point was a lookout point fishermen and onlookers as they watched the fishing boats coming in with their daily catch. |

a popular Whale Watching Spot from the rocky clifftops. Southern Right Whales visit our coastline annually between July and November. During peak season tourist across the world flock to Gearings Point watching these gentle giants of the ocean. | ||
